Senior Linux Systems Administrator
Required Qualifications: (As evidenced by an attached resume)
Bachelor’s degree. In lieu of the Bachelor's degree, an Associates degree and two  years of directly related full-time experience may be considered.Four  years of full time system administration experience in a professional setting to include day-to-day account and system management, hardware installation, configuration, monitoring, upgrades, repairs, and working with industry best practices across multiple Linux Distributions (e.g. Debian, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, etc).Familiarity with external storage configuration and management (e.g. NFS, iSCSI).Familiarity with security best practices.
Preferred Qualifications :
Advanced Degree.Additional years of applicable experience.Experience with High Performance Computing Clusters (HPC).Experience supporting research technologies and applications, large data sets, scientific software, databases, file and web servers.Experience with programming languages.Familiarity with TCP/IP, private and public networks.Experience troubleshooting basic networks.Experience working within academia, in a technical capacity.Experience with virtualization technologies.Familiarity with configuration of switches, load balancers and hardware firewalls.Basic understanding of the following: LDAP, SAN/NAS configuration, SFTP, Kerberos, InfiniBand and/or related technologies.
Brief Description of Duties:
The incumbent will provide support for on-campus Linux systems used for research at Stony Brook University. This includes Linux servers and workstations used by researchers, as well as providing backup support for High Performance Computing clusters. We are looking for someone who will help researchers design, procure, implement, monitor and troubleshoot their Linux systems. The successful incumbent must have outstandingwritten, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.Experience successfully working independently as well as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem solving.Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail.Strong personal motivation.
Responsible for the designing and managing of Linux servers/workstations, storage and operating systems; applying patches, keeping libraries up to date, provisioning accounts, racking new nodes, system tuning, configuring firewalls & network security and other day-to-day maintenance tasks following industry best practices.In performance of all job duties, at all times be responsible for delivering optimal customer service, for protecting institutional data and privacy, and the excellent delivery of solutions and services by following divisional and University policies, procedures, and processes.
Assist HPC administrators including account provisioning, operating system & storage management, systems support, security, and integration with existing on campus systems. Additionally, provide support for virtual Linux platforms offered through cloud resources like the OpenStack component of the SeaWulf cluster.
Manage researchers’ external storage solutions, attached via DAC, iSCSI, NFS, etc. Assess backup requirements and perform backups.
Ensure jobs and overall system health of the HPC are running smoothly by monitoring priority queues, ensuring nodes are running optimally, as well as recommending specified upgraded paths for future growth & interacting with vendors for sales & support.
Assist with purchasing new hardware needed by researchers suited for their environment.
Troubleshoot hardware and replace parts as needed, as well as troubleshoot and fix software problems.
Serve as an educational and technical resource for researchers on HPC systems (e.g. Handy, LI-red, SeaWulf), responsible for providing on campus technical support on topics like scripting, programming, use of the cluster queue system, compilers and MPI.
Responsible for tuning performance on Linux systems using common scripting languages and network protocols.
Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and department mission.
This is a full time appointment. This position is noted as a temporary assignment that could last up to five years.FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
