At StonyBrook Medicine, a TH Medical Physicist isa valuable member of our team, who provides clinical services to our patientpopulation.The overall responsibility of this position is to providephysics support to the hospital. This support is concentrated in clinicalservices, consultation, research, and teaching. Provide physics services asmandated by regulatory agencies including the Joint Commission on theAccreditation of Health Care Organizations, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Foodand Drug Administration, and State Radiation Control agencies.

Duties of a TH Medical Physicist in the Radiology Physicsmay include the following but are not limited to:

BriefDescription of Duties:

  • Ensure that special projects (i.e., patient exposure evaluations,shielding designs, shielding evaluations) are preformed accurately and in atimely fashion.

  • Conduct all periodic QC as assigned by the Chief of ClinicalMedical Physics.

  • Ensure that a preliminary report of required action is filed withappropriate service organizations and the Chief Medical Physicist in a timelyfashion following QA assessment. Reviewscorrective action taken by service and, after satisfactory completion,generates a final QC memo to all pertinent parties. Data and reports are meticulous and filed in theOffice of the Chief Medical Physicist in accordance with section policies.

  • Ensure there is a verbal update of ongoing projects. Reports are filed in a timely fashion inaccordance with section policies. Special project are completed in a timely manner.

  • Maintains professional growth through published papers,presentations, graduate studies, attendance at professional meetings andmaintenance of current New York State Department of Education, Medical HealthPhysics, Nuclear Medicine Physics, Diagnostic Radiological Physics and ABRCertification in Diagnostic Radiological Physics.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

1.Master’sDegree in a Physical Science.

2.Successfulcompletion of Parts 1 and 2 of the American Board of Radiology certification examination in Diagnostic Radiological Physics.

3.Scheduledto complete Part 3 of the American Board of Radiology certification examination in Diagnostic Radiological Physics.

4.Eligiblefor the New York State Department of Education license as a ProfessionalMedical Physicist in Diagnostic Radiological Physics.

5.Asa condition of continued employment must obtain a New York State Department of Education license as a Professional Medical Physicist in Diagnostic Medical Physicswithin three (3) months of the beginning of employment.

6.Twoyears of experience in the testing and evaluation of diagnostic radiologicalimaging equipment. This experience may be gained as a Resident in aCAMPEP approved Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program.

  1. As a condition of continued employment must become Certified by the American Board of Radiology in Diagnostic Radiological Physics within two (2) years of beginning employment.

  2. As a condition of continued employment must become Certified under MQSA to perform Mammographic surveys (Full-Field Digital and Digital Breast Tomosynthasis) within tow (2) years of beginning employment.

* Preferred Qualifications: *

1.Fouror more years of experience as a Diagnostic Medical Physicist performing testsand evaluations of all of the modalities. Two of those years may be as aResident in a CAMPEP approved Residency Program.

2.Familiaritywith New York State Department of Health Regulations regarding the use and performance of Diagnostic Radiological Imaging equipment.

3.Qualifiedunder MQSA regulations to perform surveys on Mammographic Imaging equipment.

  • Several times a year the candidate will need to work outside of his/her shift due to special projects and needs within the department. Such as: early mornings, late nights, & weekends.
