Associate Director, Ambulatory Coding
At Stony Brook Medicine, ourAssociate Director, Ambulatory Coding will be a valuable member of our team. Reporting to the Director of Revenue Integrity, the Associate Director, Ambulatory Codingwill need tohave comprehensive knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding guidelines particularly as it relates to APCmethodologies. The Associate Director, Ambulatory Coding will also need to have a strongworking knowledge of all regulatory requirements associated with coding and APCassignment, significant coding experience, and proficiency in medical recordreview and documentation standards.
Duties of the Associate Director, Ambulatory Coding may include but are not limited to thefollowing:
Responsiblefor the day-to-day management of the ambulatory coding staff, inclusive ofinterviewing, training, evaluation, workflow and productivity.
Performdata quality reviews on ambulatory encounters to validate the ICD-10-CM, CPTand HCPCS Level II code and modifier assignments, APC group appropriateness, secondarydiagnoses and/or procedures and ensure compliance with all relative CMSmandates and outpatient reporting requirements.
Manageday-to-day activities of the ambulatory coding staff and prepare periodicreports which track coding productivity and quality metrics. Communicate with ambulatory coding staff anyidentified deviations from established metrics.
Continuouslyevaluate the quality of clinical documentation to identify incomplete orinconsistent documentation for outpatient encounters that impact the codeselection and resulting reimbursement.
Collaboratewith the Associate Director, Revenue Integrity Staff Development inidentification of areas for training of ambulatory coding staff related tovarious topics, including updated coding guidelines and practices, medicalterminology and disease processes.
Maintainknowledge of new technology related to coding and abstracting software andother forms of automation, maintain current knowledge of coding updates, HIPAAprivacy requirements and other issues impacting the coding process.
Maintaincurrent knowledge of CMS’ LCD, NCD and NCCI edits resolve claim scrubberissues.
Developreports and collect and prepare data involving outpatient data for clinicalevaluation purposes and/or financial impact and profitability, utilizing Excel,Monarch, Vizient databases as appropriate.
Demonstratecompetency in the use of computer applications and APC Grouper Software, OCEedits and all coding and abstracting software and hardware currently in use bythe Revenue Integrity Department.
Incollaboration with the Associate Director, Revenue Integrity, monitoroutpatient unbilled accounts reports for outstanding and/or un-coded outpatientencounters.
Coordinateand monitor the outsourced coding vendor’s processes and accuracy. Monitoroutside vendor access to the SBUH Access HIM system.
Collaboratewith R.I. Staff Development related to the monthly coding staff review process.
Provideoversight to outside Compliance Audits relative to ambulatory coding processes.Verify that outside vendors are providingservices consistent with contract terms, and that vendor billing isaccurate.Collaborate with AssociateDirector, R.I. related to Ambulatory Services issues in coding (e.g. RAC, MAC,Private Insurance)
Collaboratewith SBUH IT department liaison related to IT issues in the Access HIM systemwhich affects function, timeliness of coding process, or DNFB.
ManageAmbulatory Registration issues and corrections.
Abideby the Standards of Ethical Coding as set forth by the American Health InformationManagement Association.
Performother duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications: A Bachelor’s Degree with RHIA credential; or AssociatesDegree in Health Information Technology or equivalent with RHIT credential; orsuccessful completion of a coding program with an advanced coding credential (CCSor CCS-P)and three or more years acute care hospitalambulatory coding experience. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications: Five or more years acute teaching hospital-basedambulatory surgery and/or emergency department coding and auditing experience.
